The subject of the work during the residency can be summarised in the title ‘Studdy on the cunto and abbanniàta’, where the cunto is the narrative technique in which words are shattered and syllables emerge naked within a rhythmic score in continuous evolution and construction. The cunto is used to tell of a world that is shattered, especially at a psychic level, and anticipates the possibilities of the curvature of time.
The abbanniàta is a vocal technique used in markets or by carters to sell their wares, and is marked by particular melismas of Arab and Middle Eastern origin, and takes the form of a sort of lyrical cry, designed to seduce but which immediately makes ‘the barker’ recognisable. Part of the work will be to hybridise the barks with electronic music, seeking in each case to create an original score that tells the sound and breath of a geography.
