In 2008, the Japanese performer Matsune stumbled upon a newspaper article that reported a story of a professional dancer who was forced to dance as part of a passport control at an international airport. When he read the article, he couldn’t help but smiling because of its absurdity.

At arrival at the Tel Aviv international airport in 2008, as a member of the world famous modern dance company Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater from New York City, dancer Abdur Rahim Jackson was taken to a side room for strict questioning. There, the border security officer demanded him to dance in order to prove his profession and take away suspicions caused by his Muslim first name. A world-class dancer and an innocent terror suspect. A person whose identity had to be proven by his dance. What really happened to Abdur Rahim Jackson there? How did he dance for the border security officer?

Michikazu Matsune investigates this bizarre yet true story through a very personal approach.

Dance, if you want to enter my country! is a solo-performance with narrative stories, dance, video projection and objects, suitable either in theatre or gallery space. The performance deals with our constant struggle to find one’s own identity beyond territories and categorisations, beyond frictions and hindrances in our globalized world.
